CDT - Artificial Intelligence for Medical Diagnosis and Care

By Hien Nguyen

The UKRI CDT in AI for Medical Diagnosis and Care is now in its fourth year. The Centre, the grant for which is based in Computing School, has found its excellent home in both LIDA and the Bragg building, where its students benefit from the opportunity to build a truly interdisciplinary network of highly talented researchers. The CDT was set up in April 2019 and the first cohort started on 1st October 2019. The Centre, which over its lifetime aims to recruit 50 researchers, had a third intake of 12 highly talented students including CDT and associated CDT PhD students and will welcome our fourth cohort in September 2022. The CDT is led and hosted by the University of Leeds and is founded on a close partnership with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.

Our students have a variety of mainly STEM backgrounds, ranging from computer science, maths, and physics to bioengineering. In their first year, students complete 12 months of an 18-month MSc programme, and during that year, they select their PhD topic from a list of proposed projects. In 2021, the CDT invited over 100 potential supervisors in the University and NHS to submit project proposals for Cohort 3. Our Cohort 3 students are going to complete their PhD-related MSc projects in September, having made a successful start with their PhD work. The CDT programme leads to an integrated PhD/MSc in AI for Medical Diagnosis and Care.

During the last 12 months, a joint conference between the four UKRI AI CDTs in the health domain was held in May 2022 in Milton Keynes. This was an outstanding opportunity for our CDT students to showcase their work and make connections outside the University. Our own CDT conference was also held for the first time in June 2022, highlighting the research of students and providing a networking opportunity for everyone involved with the CDT. Our CDT AI students have also presented their work at a range of conferences, including Medical Imaging with Deep Learning (MIDL2022), UKRI CDT in Speech and Language Technologies Conference, International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) and the monthly meetings of the National Pathology Imaging Cooperative’s Digital Research Group at St James’s Hospital. In addition, the CDT students have participated in a number of STEM outreach events to convey the importance of AI in healthcare, such as Reach for Excellence, Be Curious, and Breakfast Talks on AI for students at Cheney School in Oxford.
