Ever wanted to learn more about how mobile applications can be built? Are you coming from the business sector with questions about how mobile apps can gather the data you need? This half-day training course, run as part of the Leeds Digital Festival 2018, is designed as an introduction to exploring the building blocks of Smartphone apps, the relative merits of different approaches in creating mobile content, and to give you an insight into the technology behind the ever-growing smartphone industry.

Course Overview

There are a million and one ways to create mobile content – from computer programming for native iOS and Android apps to web-based app building tools for code-free creation. In this session we will have an introductory look at some of the alternative routes that exist to create mobile content without pre-existing coding skills.

Objectives

Participants will be able to experiment with ways to create the mobile functionality that they need with software such as MIT AppInventor, which allows you to create apps with native functionality, and tools such as PhoneGap which will allow you to repurpose web content as standalone apps. We will also reflect on the pros and cons of the different approaches to creating mobile content.

Course Tutor

Dr Chris Birchall is Lecturer in Digital Media at the University of Leeds, programme lead of the BA Digital Media degree and co-convener of the Digital Culture research group in the School of Media and Communication.
