Title: Semantic information ecosystems: Don't take your data out of context!

Abstract: This talk will present work from the Digital Economy Research Group at the University of Aberdeen which employs semantic web technologies to manage and integrate a range of diverse data sources, including open data assets, sensors, social media, and crowd. A central feature of the work is the focus on modelling contextual information via representations of real and virtual assets and their associated metadata (provenance in particular) to enhance the transparency of semantic systems. Such additional contextual information is then utilised to support automated reasoning and assessments over data and processes.  The talk will feature work exploring these ideas in a range of application areas including transport disruption, food safety compliance, social computation workflows, and the Internet of Things.

Bio: Dr Milan Markovic is a Research Fellow in Computing Science at the University of Aberdeen working under Professor Pete Edwards. Milan obtained his PhD from the University of Aberdeen in 2016 for his work on use of provenance to enhance social computation, which was conducted as part of the RCUK dot.rural Digital Economy Hub. In addition to his PhD studies, Milan has also been involved  in a number of projects including: Social Journeys (with FirstGroup) - exploring the use of social media and semantic technologies to provide intelligent solutions for personalised transport disruption reporting; Food Things (with the Food Standards Agency) ? exploring the potential of the internet of things for food safety compliance monitoring. His current research interests focus on semantic representation and use of contextual information to perform assessments of trust and data veracity across a range of areas including social computation, transport, and the Internet of Things.
