Child Health Outcomes Research at Leeds (CHORAL)

CHORAL is an exciting new platform to support and develop child health research across Leeds. CHORAL aims to improve children’s lives through the delivery of a sustainable programme of transformative research focussed on child health.

CHORAL links key areas of strength within Leeds, including innovative ‘Big Data’ linkage, the study of the wider determinants of social, physical and mental health, and children’s cancer translational research.

Over the past year, CHORAL has:

  • Supported the appointment of a new NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in health data linkage.
  • Supported multiple NIHR Academic Clinical Foundation posts exploiting local data assets such as the Paediatric Intensive Care Clinical Audit Network (PICANet) and Yorkshire Specialist Register of Cancer in Children and Young People (YSRCCYP) to examine variation in specialist PICU transport services and describe cardio-metabolic late effects of cancer treatment.

We are also currently:

  • Supporting establishment of the Yorkshire and Humber Secure Data Environment to enhance data linkage across the region and improve outcomes for Children and Young People, using PICANet and YSRCCYP datasets.
  • Offering statistical consultancy support to child health researchers.
