Data Science Infrastructures

Who we are

We are a group of researchers with an interest in Data Science Infrastructures such as cloud computing, edge computing and the Internet of Everything.

We are based in different schools (computing, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering) and faculties (engineering and physical sciences, medicine and health) and look at different aspects of research in this field. From a computer science perspective, we are interested in  assembling infrastructure for data science and machine learning applications and managing cutting cloud/edge data infrastructures. We investigate scalable techniques for data storage, computation, experiment tracking, and orchestration that are relevant to data scientists. We also have special interest in system architectures and quality of service inherent in those infrastructures.

What we do

We use Data Science Infrastructures to support growing data science projects from prototype to production. Our research develops fundamental principles and practical methods for problems that are computationally challenging and require large scale computing resources. We stand up an infrastructure stack from applications, programming models, middleware, virtualisation to hardware. We apply it to a variety of real-world problems across Health, Societies and Environment.

We seek the latest advancements and use case cases for Data Science Infrastructures by being involved in multidisciplinary research with our academic and industrial partners that motivates part of our methodologies. Of particular interest is the exploration of the usability of infrastructure clouds from the perspective of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and other data science applications, the performance, reliability and fault-tolerance of solutions used, and data management issues.

We partner with external stakeholders in different sectors such as Alibaba, Atos and Meta. We run regular workshops, seminars and events to ask questions, learn from one another and share new use cases and ideas.
