Applications open for PROMOTE mentoring scheme supporting leadership in biomedical data science

The Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA) has opened applications for a new UK-wide mentoring scheme through its Health Community PROMOTE project, inviting both mentors and mentees to take part.

The PROMOTE mentoring scheme is designed to support mid-career biomedical data scientists in developing leadership skills, progressing their careers, and building connections across academia, industry and the NHS. Senior leaders from across these sectors are encouraged to apply as mentors.

This new scheme marks an important next stage in the PROMOTE project and responds directly to findings from a qualitative career survey led by the team in early 2026. Drawing on 114 responses, the survey highlighted strong demand for structured mentoring, particularly to support leadership development and clearer career progression pathways.

Participants will be matched in mentor–mentee pairs and take part in a structured nine-month programme running from September 2026 to May 2027. The scheme includes four interactive online workshops, alongside four to six one-to-one mentoring meetings. All sessions will take place online via Microsoft Teams and will be supported by a wider community network for peer exchange and shared learning.

The mentoring scheme forms part of a wider Medical Research Council-funded project aimed at improving career pathways and opportunities for biomedical data scientists.

Kylie Norman, Manager and Mentoring Lead for the Data Scientist Development Programme said: “Mentoring is a fantastic vehicle for creating space for conversations that otherwise have a limited outlet in professional academic environments or that take place in an ad hoc, ‘nice to have’ way. For mid-career biomedical data scientists in particular, having this space will benefit them by opening up conversations mapping career progression pathways and converting experience into knowledge and best practice. Because mentoring at its heart is collegial, it benefits not only the mentee but also the mentor by providing both with vital self-reflection and growth.”

Jess Shilton, PROMOTE Researcher said: “We were delighted by the strong response to our survey, with 75% of biomedical data scientists expressing enthusiasm for a future mentoring scheme. The clearest priority was developing career progression and leadership skills, and we’re excited to have designed a programme that directly meets those ambitions.”
