LIDA-led University of Leeds partnership with the Alan Turing Institute: mid-term review update

Date

The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, has recently undergone an independent mid‑term review by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), helping to shape the next phase of the Institute’s development.

The review recognised the Turing’s strong foundations and clear evidence of scientific excellence, alongside the value of its people and partnerships, while setting out a series of recommendations to strengthen its strategic focus, governance and engagement with stakeholders. A clearer mission centred on national resilience, security and defence, alongside improved delivery and value for money, will guide the Institute’s evolution over the coming period.

The University of Leeds’ partnership with the Turing is led by the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA), with Leeds having been a partner since 2018. Through this relationship, researchers from across the University contribute to collaborative research, skills development and engagement activities aligned to the Turing’s national priorities.

Existing partnerships expanded into the Turing University Network (TUN), which launched in 2023 to bring together the UK’s university data science and AI community. The University has recently extended its TUN membership for a further six months, reaffirming its commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary research and skills development at a national level.

As UKRI works with the Turing and its partners to implement the review’s recommendations, LIDA will continue to lead and nurture the University of Leeds’ engagement, supporting research excellence, talent development and impact across data science and AI.
