Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Medical Diagnosis and Care
The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Medical Diagnosis and Care is now in its sixth year. The Centre is hosted by the University of Leeds, founded on a close partnership with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. We have now recruited over 50 research students from a variety of mainly STEM backgrounds, ranging from computer science, maths, and physics to bioengineering. Our first cohort are now graduating into careers within the NHS and health-related industries. During 2024, our fifth cohort has embarked on research on a range of topics addressing the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disease and cancer; and exploring the application of AI in hospital logistics.
A joint conference between the four UKRI AI CDTs in the health domain (Edinburgh, Imperial, Leeds and UCL) was held in Edinburgh in May 2024. Jack Breen from our CDT won the prize for the best talk from a ballot of all delegates.
Over 2024, our students have presented their work at a growing number of leading international conferences in the health domain. They have also been involved in many public engagement and outreach events, such as In2STEM, promoting social mobility and diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
