Research Fellow Opportunities at LIDA
We are looking to expand our LIDA team with two three year Research Fellow positions currently available. The first post is attached to the PIGSustain project, a multi-disciplinary, cross-institution collaborative project investigating the future of the UK’s pig industry. The role focuses on understanding consumption patterns and forecasting consumer trends. The second post is attached to the MISTRAL project, phase 2 of the Infrastructure Transitions Research Consortium (ITRC). The role will develop estimates and projections of household composition and demographic attributes which will be used to inform the development and delivery of infrastructure (including energy, transport and digital communications). Research Fellow in Demographic Estimation and Forecasting at the University of Leeds

The UK Infrastructure Transitions Research Consortium (ITRC) brings together seven research intensive universities to develop a new generation of infrastructure models to inform the analysis, planning and design of National Infrastructure. MISTRAL: Multi-scale InfraSTRucture systems AnaLytics, builds on previous success of the ITRC in establishing a National Infrastructure Systems Model (NISMOD). The aim of MISTRAL is to develop and demonstrate a highly integrated analytics capability to inform strategic infrastructure decision-making across scales, from local to global. MISTRAL has more than £5 million in funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, as well as the support of 52 industry partners.
You will be responsible for generating synthetic estimates of household composition and demographic attributes and for the future projections of household composition. These projections will be used to explore future household infrastructure demand in different social, economic and policy scenarios. Characteristics that influence household demand for infrastructure services will be assigned from new socio-economic datasets, including those recently made available by the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC). These might include household consumption records, social media traffic, movement data and capacity data. You will work with the larger MISTRAL team, delivering results which form part of larger work package for high resolution infrastructure simulation.

Research Fellow in Forecasting Consumer Trends at the University of Leeds
Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in demography, forecasting consumer trends or a quantitative social science? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities?
PIGSustain is a multi-disciplinary, cross-institution collaborative project with multiple work packages in epidemiology and statistics, consumer data analysis, agricultural economics, and vision engineering/machine learning. This work package is part of a systems approach to understand how intensification, climate change, global production and consumer demand will impact on the UK pig industry.
You will work as part of a team and be responsible for forecasting consumer trends, collecting and synthesising datasets containing information about consumer expenditure patterns, attitudes and demographics as well as information about historic trends in price. Using appropriate statistical methods, you will assess the propensity to purchase products in relation to underlying drivers of price and consumer behaviour and also produce population projections under a series of scenarios using microsimulation. You will work with epidemiologists, statisticians and agricultural economists from a range of institutions and engage with academic and non-academic partners.
