Presentation: Big data to re-define cardiovascular disease: multimorbidity profiles for myocardial infarction
By: Dr Marlous Hall, Wellcome Trust Fellow and University Academic Fellow, University of Leeds
Abstract: The increasing prevalence of multimorbidity is a major global challenge facing healthcare systems. Around two-thirds of patients with cardiovascular disease are estimated to have at least one additional chronic condition which are associated with reduced quality of life, increased healthcare burden, and increased mortality. Although many prior studies have assessed the association of individual co-morbidities for patients with myocardial infarction with mortality few have quantified the burden of multiple chronic conditions - in particular how the complex patterns of multiple conditions simultaneously associate with mortality. Where data do exist on the clustering of conditions, studies have relied on basic analytical techniques which consider composite additive or weighted co-morbidity scores. More sophisticated methods, such as latent class analyses, enable high resolution insights into multi-dimensional disease patterns based on probabilistic modelling of specific conditions without the aforementioned limitations.
In this talk I will present the results of a large scale national study determining multimorbidity profiles over a ten year period for patients with myocardial infarction and their impact on long term survival.
